If you can not bring good news, then don't bring any
idle chatter: haynes' "i'm not there" not in cannesThe absence of Todd Haynes "I'm Not There from the Cannes Film Festival lineup was the big surprise early this morning as I surveyed the fest's official selection. Being so anxious to see the movie, I shuddered to think that it could have been rejected by Cannes. Well, as it turns out that's not the case.I emailed someone very close to the movie today and was told that the film is simply not finished and wasn't even shown to Cannes festival brass. Instead, its a safe bet that "I'm Not There" will be on the fall festival circuit...
My good friend Marijose worked on the post-production (sky replacements, day-for-night replacements, a few effects shots) of this film at this Montreal Post-Production boite. When they 'finished' the film, they showed the crew a really, really rough cut, with the archival footage missing (because of licensing not yet approved and paid for) and with the effects shots also missing, and she said that even in that state, the film was very moving, evocative, and powerful, and that it was going to open far and wide, becoming almost certainly a critical darling of a film. More success for Made-in-Quebec films is always a great, great thing...
Pitchfork: I understand you're coming off a late night in the studio.Thurston Moore: Yeah, we were recording an unreleased Bob Dylan song. Sonic Youth was doing it. We were gonna hand it over to Todd Haynes, who's doing that Bob Dylan meta-bio, and see if he wants to do anything with it. Todd is an old friend of ours, he's worked with us before, so he asked us if he wanted to cover this one unreleased tune which actually is the title of the film, I believe. "I'm Not There".
