Dylan / Två tidigare ocirkulerade versioner från 1963
« skrivet: 16 februari, 2021, 22:40:38 »

Två tidigare ocirkulerade versioner av When The Ship Comes In & The Times They Are A-Changin', troligen från sommar/höst 1963, har dykt upp

Skulle kunna vara från Broadside Collection, 1962-1991, som arkiveras i  Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library.

SFC Audio Open Reel FT-20289/9520
Bob Dylan. Unidentified artist. Dubs.

Side 1.1. Audio letter to Pete Seeger. Unidentified speaker.

Side 1.2. "The Times they are a Changin',"  Bob Dylan. Dub.

Side 1.3. "When the Ship comes In,"  Bob Dylan. Dub.

Agnes (Sis) Cunningham, musician and magazine publisher of New York, N.Y., founded Broadside, a magazine devoted to topical songs, with her husband, Gordon Friesen, in the early 1960s. They recorded and published many of the leading folksingers of the folk revival. The collection contains materials from the Broadside offices. Sound recordings include open reel tapes and audio cassettes, many of which were used to transcribe topical folk songs for publication in Broadside. Additional recordings include demo tapes, live concert performances, and interviews, which were sent to the Broadside offices by friends, folk singers, and subscribers. The work of numerous performers is included (many of the most significant are listed in the online catalog terms below). Documentation materials include a log of the Broadside tapes, correspondence, and tape notes. The Broadside tape log is a list of the tapes in their original order. Correspondence and tape notes consist of materials included in the original tape boxes. Correspondence includes personal letters to Cunningham and Friesen from friends and contributors. Tape notes contain track listings of songs, dates of performances, and names of performers.

My research concludes that it is the tape made by Sis Cunningham at her home in late August/early September 1963.

Sis Cunningham was the publisher of Broadside Magazine. Bob visited her around the time he made demos of the same two songs for Witmark. She recorded this tape to enable her to transcribe the songs for publishing in Broadside. It is not clear whether Suze accompanied Bob on the visit so the female voice could be Sis or it could be Suze; it's very unlikely to be Joan, although Bob did stay with Joan at her home in Carmel very shortly after this event.

When "The Times They Are A Changin'" was published in Broadside #39, dated February 7th 1964, it contained the about face line "Don't block up the doorways, don't stand in the halls", exactly as sung on this tape. Here is an image of the publication.

Greetings, everyone!

Here is the story behind this tape. About 19 years ago, I was doing some research for an ongoing project about Bob Dylan, Broadside Magazine, Phil Ochs, Pat Sky and the whole early-60s Village milieu. I’ve been a music reviewer for a suburban daily newspaper, where I interviewed folks like Frank Zappa, a recording engineer, where I got to work on a Ramblin’ Jack record, and a performing songwriter. And of course a fan of Bob’s, though I’ve only seen him perform once.

I’m fascinated by the power of social realist music to effect change, and I feel a song like "The Times They Are A-Changin’" really did change the world, for the better. My hero and dear friend Guy Carawan, who co-wrote “We Shall Overcome,” and who’s daughter connected me with my wife, proved words of action melded with the right melody and beat can move mountains.

In the course of my research, I discovered the newly-processed Broadside Collection at the Southern Folklife Collection in North Carolina. It is a truly amazing archive, and contains most of the tapes that Sis Cunningham and Gordon Freisen used to transcribe the music for publication in Broadside Magazine. These tapes often captured the first recordings of songs that became folk standards, and of artists who became household names. They all traipsed through the Broadside apartment and laid down their latest, or sat for an interview with Sis or Gordon, with the sound of squawking birds offering accompaniment.

Back then, the rules were not as strict as to who was able to access the Collection. These days, access is much more limited, and you have to be present on campus to even hear most of the tapes. I managed to acquire digital copies of much of the collection, and it was actually my interest and initiative, and money, that first got the collection digitized.

One of the features of the Broadside Collection is a series of tapes of Pete Seeger talking, or others talking to Pete Seeger, essentially audio letters. Apparently, Pete, who supplied the Revere tape deck used in the Broadside apartment, hired Sis to transcribe correspondence for him, so these tapes ended up getting mixed in with all the Broadside material.

Congrats, Pol2gem for your excellent research. You nailed it and found the tape, FT20289 / 9520. Great work!

The main thing about the curation of the tape that has led to its remaining hidden in plain sight for so long, is that when this particular Finding Aid lists something as a “Dub” it almost always means it was copied it from a record, or a known tape, which likely discouraged researchers from pursuing it further. All the other Bob material labelled “Dub” is such already known material. Believe me, I’ve checked, though there is always the possibility I’ve missed something. Also, labeling it “Unidentified speaker” made it seem trivial.

It took me years to figure out who the “Unidentified speaker” is, but I finally realized it is Theo Bikel. This morning I have posted the last missing piece of the puzzle, Theo’s audio letter to Pete Seeger, who was currently on his World Tour. Theo recorded the songs to send to Pete, because he thought “the songs are so good, Pete might want to perform them on the road.”

I agree with Pol2gem that Sis likely used this tape to transcribe the two songs for Broadside Magazine, for the reasons he states, and also there are no other recordings of these two songs in the collection. Also “the slowest one” is the printed Broadside lyric for “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”

You have now heard the entire tape. I have done a slight bit of audio restoration, to correct the levels in a couple of spots, and cut out irrelevant noises, but otherwise it is untouched, and just as Theo recorded it, pretty nicely, I might add.

Well, that is the story of this historic find. It has been fun revealing it! It would be great to hear from Bob, to see if he remembers that particular evening, and could perhaps identify the woman and location. I hope this tape works its way to him some how.

As for me, I’m still working on my long-term project, but have lately been suffering some serious health issues, which inspired me to get this tape out there, lest I don’t make it, and the tape never gets discovered. This tape is too important to stay masked and anonymous!

Thank you everyone. Happy Valentine’s Day! I love you all.

Dylan / Bob Dylan 2021
« skrivet: 12 december, 2020, 16:44:48 »

While nothing is confirmed, the singer’s team is most excited at a future Bootleg Series spotlighting his pre-fame days as a coffeehouse performer in New York’s Greenwich Village. “We’ve wanted to do a Bootleg Series on Bob’s earliest performances for a long time,” says a source close to the Bob Dylan camp. “For decades we’ve been collecting tapes from the time before he began making official recordings. I think it would be really interesting to go through those. We’ll probably call it something like “The Villager.” Recordings from his era have been circulating within fan circles for decades, most notably a trio of tapes that Dylan’s girlfriend Bonnie Beecher and his friend Tony Glover created between May and December of 1961. The vast majority of songs in his set at the time were covers like “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “I Ain’t Go No Home” and “Man of Constant Sorrow.” “We have some beautiful-sounding tapes that nobody has ever heard,” says the source. “Or if they have, we have first generation tapes.”

Sen fyller Dylan 80 år i maj, det kommer förmodligen inte att gå spårlöst förbi. Det kommer förmodligen släppas böcker och skrivas en hel del om honom. I april släpper Clinton Heylin en ny bok som behandlar åren 1941-1966, A Restless Hungry Feeling: The Double Life of Bob Dylan Vol. 1: 1941-1966.

Dylan / Universal Music Publishing Buys Bob Dylan's Song Catalog
« skrivet: 07 december, 2020, 18:23:41 »

In what could be the biggest deal ever for a single songwriter, Universal Music Publishing Group announced today (Dec. 7) that it had purchased Bob Dylan’s entire catalog of songs, from 1962 to the present, from Dylan himself. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the acquisition includes both publishing rights and Dylan's "writer's share," which together would be worth at least $100 million and perhaps several times that, based on the value of other catalogs.

Dylan's publishing is currently administered in the U.S. by the Bob Dylan Music Company and elsewhere by Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

The market for publishing deals has continued to heat up, even amid the pandemic, fueled by the boom in streaming, as well as low interest rates that make acquisitions more appealing. The temporary shutdown of the concert business, as well as the possibility that president-elect Joe Biden will raise the capital gains tax, seem to be spurring sales, too.

Another factor, industry sources say, is that the generation of singer-songwriters who came of age in the sixties and seventies is at a point where they’re thinking about their legacies, as well as estate planning. On December 4, Primary Wave Music Publishing announced that it had acquired a majority stake in the catalog of singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks, in a deal that The Wall Street Journal reported valued her compositions at $100 million. That deal and Dylan’s could trigger more big catalog transactions.

This is a unique prize, however. Among the songwriters of the rock era, only the Beatles are as influential as Dylan, the only songwriter to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The catalog includes more than 600 compositions, written over the course of six decades, including "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Times They Are A-Changin,'" "Like A Rolling Stone," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and "Tangled Up in Blue."

“To represent the body of work of one of the greatest songwriters of all time - whose cultural importance can’t be overstated - is both a privilege and a responsibility,” said UMPG chairman & CEO Jody Gerson in the UMG statement announcing the deal. In an internal company note about the deal, Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge wrote that it has "forever transformed the legacy of this company."

In the early sixties, Dylan, 79, become one of the first popular artists to consistently write his own material, in the process overturning the dominant music publishing model of the time, which involved professional songwriters composing tunes to pitch to singers. Although Dylan has released 39 albums, some of his songs are still better known as recordings by other artists -- from Jimi Hendrix’s iconic cover of “All Along the Watchtower” to Garth Brooks’ and Adele’s versions of "Make You Feel My Love."

Some other recent big publishing acquisitions have essentially been auctions, but this deal seems to have been conducted fairly privately. There was no bidding war, according to a source close to the deal, which came out of the relationship between Dylan’s team and Universal Publishing, especially UMPG COO Marc Cimino, whom Gerson credited in the announcement as "instrumental in bringing this opportunity to us."

Over the past decade, many creators have sold their catalogs to independent publishers, some of which are funded by private equity investors. But the majors – Universal, Sony/ATV, and Warner Chappell Music – still dominate the business. “When you put songwriters first, when you achieve unparalleled value for the art they create, when your track record is clear and consistent then the best of the best come to you," Grainge wrote in his internal note.

Publishing catalogs are generally valued by multiples of net publisher’s share – roughly akin to gross profit after songwriter royalties are paid out but in this case annual revenue since Dylan now owns most of his publishing too – and the most valuable now sell for 17 or 18 times net publisher’s share, up from 14 or 15 times several years ago. It’s hard to estimate how much revenue Dylan’s publishing brings in, however, since his songs are so widely covered. The publishing from sales and streaming of Dylan’s own recordings might have been worth about a half a million dollars in the U.S. in 2019, according to a Billboard estimate. But the publishing from other versions of his songs could be worth several times that – cover versions of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” alone generated more than $150,000 in the U.S. from sales and streaming last year – and synch licensing in movies, television shows and advertising generates still more revenue as does royalties from when Dylan’s songs are played in clubs, concert halls, bars, restaurants hotels and other retail-like establishments. So does royalty income come in from the musical Girl from the North Country.

Dylan’s songs have been covered by artists all over the world, from Brazilian icon Caetano Veloso to “Austropop” singer Wolfgang Ambros, and the use of his songs in advertising still generates attention. The iconic stature of Dylan’s songs could also open up other businesses: His lyrics have already been licensed for lyric books, picture books, and even a comic book (“Bob Dylan Revisited: 12 Graphic Interpretations of Bob Dylan Songs.”) And the fact that Darius Rucker had a No. 1 county hit with “Wagon Wheel,” based partly on an unreleased Dylan song from 1973, shows that money could be made in more traditional ways as well.

It’s hard to imagine many songwriters' catalogs that would be worth more, partly because most classic rock catalogs are smaller, and many were the products of writing partnerships. Dylan occasionally worked with other writers – most prominently the theatre director Jacques Levy on Desire and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter on Together Through Life – but he composed by himself the vast majority of his songs, and all of the most popular ones.

Over the years, Dylan’s songs were divided into several catalogs, including Dwarf Music, Big Sky Music, Ram’s Horn Music, and Special Rider Music. This deal includes all of them, plus those written during Dylan’s 1962-1965 publishing deal with Witmark & Sons, which reverted to him. (Dylan’s very early compositions, including “Song to Woody” and some obscure topical songs, were published by Leeds Music, which Universal already owns.)

The deal also includes the publishing to “The Weight,” written by Robbie Robertson, the only song in the sale that Dylan did not write or co-write.

Dylan / What Bob Dylan's Drawings of His Greatest Hits Look Like
« skrivet: 14 oktober, 2018, 22:21:39 »
With 110 million records sold worldwide and a Nobel Prize under his belt, Bob Dylan has now moved on to his next achievement: an exhibition of his artwork, which is on view at Halcyon Gallery in London through the end of November 2018. Dylan's 4,000-word Nobel acceptance speech made the case that songs are "meant to be sung, not read," but, to quote the man himself, the times appear to have been a-changing, as a good portion of the works that make up his new collection, Mondo Scripto, are in fact handwritten, somewhat altered transcripts of the lyrics from a selection of his songs, stretching up until 2006. Most notable, though, are the pencil drawings that accompany each, plenty of which were of course written in a completely different era—the 1960s, dating back to even before he made the leap from folk to rock—making them all the more interesting for a now 77-year-old Dylan to reflect on. In most cases, he opted to do so extremely literally; his depiction of "Ballad of a Thin Man," for one, features the sword-swallower referenced in its lyrics, and "Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door" and "Maggie's Farm" look exactly like what their titles describe. See Dylan's interpretations of classics including "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Like a Rolling Stone," and which scene he chose from the many packed into the 11 minutes and 20 seconds that make up "Desolation Row," here.
