« skrivet: 07 september, 2023, 22:22:32 »
Den 17 november släpps The Complete/Another Budokan 1978

Newly Remixed & Remastered from Original 24-Channel Analog Tapes, The Complete Budokan 1978 Celebrates the 45th Anniversary of Bob Dylan’s First Concerts in Japan
Deluxe Box Set Presents Two Complete Shows from Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan Hall (February 28 & March 1, 1978) featuring 58 Tracks, 36 of which are Previously Unreleased
Bob Dylan – Another Budokan 1978, a 2LP Highlight Edition, features 16 Select Unreleased Live Performances.

A deluxe box set celebrating Bob Dylan’s 1978 world concert tour and the 45th anniversary of the artist’s first concert appearances in Japan, The Complete Budokan 1978 presents two full shows originally recorded on 24-channel multitrack analog tapes at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan Hall on February 28 and March 1, 1978 and offers fans 36 previously unreleased Dylan performances. The Complete Budokan 1978 will be available in 4CD, 8LP (Japan only) and digital configurations. Also available, Bob Dylan – Another Budokan 1978, a 2LP highlight edition featuring 16 specially selected unreleased tracks from the box set.

The Bob Dylan World Tour 1978 marked the artist’s first international concert dates since 1966 and his first live shows since the Rolling Thunder Revue blasted through North America in 1975-76. A major international musical event, the year-long tour found Bob Dylan performing 114 shows in Asia, Oceania, North America and Europe, to a combined audience of two million fans.

The tour launched in February 1978 with eleven historic performances: Dylan’ first-ever concerts in Japan which included eight shows at the revered Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo. Two of the Budokan shows–February 28 and March 1, 1978–were recorded on 24-channel multi-track analog tape with 22 performances excerpted from those shows appearing on Bob Dylan At Budokan, a 2LP set first issued on Columbia Records as a Japan-only release in November 1978, followed by a global release in April 1979 in response to widespread demand. The Complete Budokan 1978 marks the first time any of Dylan’s complete performances from his 1978 world tour have been officially available.

Presented in a luxurious deluxe box, The Complete Budokan 1978 includes newly remixed complete live recordings from the two Budokan concert dates featuring 36 previously unreleased tracks; facsimile memorabilia such as concert tickets, pamphlets, posters, and flyers; 60-page full-color photo book of previously unpublished photos of Dylan on-stage and behind-the-scenes at the airport, press conferences and more; exclusive liner notes. The 2LP Another Budokan 1978 features 16 previously unreleased tracks from the Budokan box.

In her liner essay for The Complete Budokan 1978, music critic Edna Gundersen notes that the original Bob Dylan At Budokan album “has undergone a sober reappraisal over the decades as consumers and critics grew to admire its adventurous arrangements and provocative performances.” She heralds the new restored and remastered release, writing that “Captured at Budokan, Dylan is in good spirits and fully engaged. He sings with brio and urgency, his voice clear and melodic and his phrasing impeccable as ever….The band crackles with careening energy…. (Dylan) saw the stage as a proving ground that brought his tunes to life.”

Sad news...

Hello everyone,

I have Olof's wife's permission to share with you the unfortunate news that Olof has been hospitalized since December 4th with some brain bleeding due to a medical condition. He has been disoriented and his road to recovery will be long and, ultimately, the extent of his return to health is unknown.

I have been in communication with his wife these past couple months, but we thought it a good idea now to share the news with the Dylan community because some people may not know why he has not corresponded with them. Also, of course, we hope that you can pray for him, think good thoughts for his recovery, and/or otherwise participate in a general good will hoping for the recovery of our dear friend.

For those of you interested, we have the Still on the Road files for 2022 finished and I have the 2022 Chronicle (titled "Philosopher Pirate") Calendar finished. However, even though I have been helping Olof out for five years or so with these files, I do not have access or a means to post updates on the website; it has always been Olof who pushed the button.

Of course, with his condition, this is hardly the primary concern right now...I simply thought I would let you all know. Thanks.

Dylan / The Last Waltz coming to Criterion Collection
« skrivet: 17 december, 2021, 14:02:24 »
Scorsese’s iconic documentary capturing the group’s 1976 farewell concert will get an updated physical release in March

The Last Waltz—Martin Scorsese’s iconic documentary capturing the Band’s 1976 farewell concert—is getting an official Criterion Collection release. Scorsese’s 1978 film will tout 4K digital restoration, audio commentary versions from Martin Scorsese, Robbie Robertson, and Mavis Staples, and others, a new interview with Scorsese conducted by critic David Fear, outtakes, and more. It will be available on Blu-ray and 4K UHD starting March 29, 2022.

The Last Waltz was filmed at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving, 1976. Scorsese approached the evening with a fleet of seven camera operators, who captured legendary performances by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, the Staple Singers, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, in addition to the Band’s goodbye concert.

Other features of the Criterion release include a 1978 interview with Scorsese and Robertson, a 2002 making-of documentary about The Last Waltz, and an essay by New Yorker writer and Pitchfork contributor Amanda Petrusich.

More than just one of the greatest concert films ever made, The Last Waltz is an at once ecstatic and elegiac summation of a vital era in American rock music. Invited to document the farewell performance of the legendary group the Band at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving, 1976, Martin Scorsese conceived a new kind of music documentary. Enlisting seven camera operators (including renowned cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond, László Kovács, and Michael Chapman) and art director Boris Leven to design the strikingly theatrical sets, Scorsese created a grandly immersive experience that brings viewers onstage and inside the music itself. That music—as performed by the Band and a host of other generation-defining artists, including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, the Staple Singers, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young—lives on as an almost religious expression of the transcendent possibilities of rock and roll.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURE

•   New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by musician Robbie Robertson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack

Dylan / Jesse Dylan talks, about Soros and Bob
« skrivet: 27 oktober, 2021, 23:04:15 »
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/jesse-dylan-interview-soros-bob-dylan-dante-vskcm0t9c

Jesse Dylan has spent time with a lot of influential people. He has shot videos for Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, made a video in support of Barack Obama featuring Will.i.am and Scarlett Johansson, and directed a comedy, Kicking and Screaming, with Will Ferrell. Then there’s the man he calls dad, one Bob Dylan. Yet the subject of Dylan’s new documentary, Soros, has arguably had a bigger effect on the world than any of that lot. Yes, even bigger than Will Ferrell.

George Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary, then fled in 1947 while it was under communist rule. He worked in finance in London and New York, made a fortune betting against the pound on Black Wednesday in 1992 and became one of the most generous philanthropists in history. According to Forbes magazine, the 91-year-old has donated 64 per cent of his original fortune and has distributed more than $15 billion to non-profit organisations through his Open Society Foundations.

The money has gone to a mind-boggling range of causes. Dylan’s film closes with an infographic that fills the screen with scores of Soros’s projects: helping to end apartheid in South Africa by funding scholarships for black students, justice for victims of the genocide in Rwanda, reduction of violent crime in Brazil, migrant protection in the UAE, LGBT rights, Black Lives Matter, global Covid relief. Some think that his support for eastern European dissidents — Solidarity in Poland, Charter 77 in Czechoslovakia, Andrei Sakharov in the Soviet Union — did more to bring about the downfall of communism than any individual except Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Lech Walesa.

Has Soros met Bob Dylan? I picture them sharing a table with Oprah Winfrey and Hilary Clinton at some high-powered charity dinner. Sadly not, Dylan, 55, says by Zoom from his home in Los Angeles. “I don’t know exactly what my dad would say about him, except to say that he does support alternative thinkers. My dad would probably see himself as an expression of America — that it could produce an artist who doesn’t do any press or talk to anybody. And I think George in his own way is something like that.”

Soros took some time to be persuaded to do the film, but he opens up on an extraordinary life. He and his Jewish family survived the “crescendo of the Holocaust” in Budapest. In just a few weeks the Nazis deported more than 400,000 Hungarian Jews, murdering many before they reached the concentration camps. A favourite technique was to rope three people together, shoot the middle one and push them into the river, where the dead body would drown the other two. Soros’s father saved his family by acquiring false identity papers, and helped many other Hungarian Jews escape death. At the end of the war Soros’s mother was raped by two Soviet soldiers.

Soros moved to London, where he studied at the London School of Economics and became a devotee of the philosopher Karl Popper’s theory of the open society. Nazis and communists were enemies because they claimed ownership of an ultimate truth. Soros pursued instead what has been called the “institutionalisation of doubt”.

“The thing that surprised me the most about him is that you can change his mind,” Dylan says. “I’ve worked with a lot of very, very wealthy people — you cannot change their minds. It might as well be written in cement. Because they were successful in one place, they think they’ll be the same success everywhere. What’s unique about George is that he doesn’t know the answer. He sits with people and talks with them, to try to understand.”

Not everybody appreciates what he does. Dylan opens his film with a series of chilling clips from American news channels, in which right-wing commentators accuse Soros of being variously a neo Nazi, a supporter of Islamist terrorism and “the world’s biggest drug trafficker”. Steve Bannon, a former adviser to President Trump, calls Soros “one of the most evil people in the world”. He has been blamed for unrest in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Thailand, Pakistan, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Jesse thinks that hatred stems from a mixture of antisemitism and resentment at liberal meddling. “It’s hard for me to understand antisemitism,” he says. “It’s, like, really, that’s our big problem? I’m Jewish, but the Jewish thing is our big problem? People see George as an outsider. It would be fair to look at what he’s actually done. We see all this negative press on Bill Gates, who has paid billions of dollars to help develop these vaccines, which have been so vital to saving us now.”

Dylan compares the conspiracy theories around Gates and Soros to viruses. “They’ve sort of eaten people’s minds. People who try to make a difference get judged harshly.”

Billionaires may be exerting even more geopolitical influence in coming years, given that President Biden seems intent on pulling America back from the world stage. “There was this idea of American exceptionalism. I think that that’s pretty much gone,” Dylan says. “As much as we try to affect things around the world, I’m not sure that we can. We have to try and create a more just world, but at the moment with populism it’s sort of careening out of control.”

Dylan’s film suggests, uncomfortably, that Soros and his like could actually be feeding that populism. Deep-pocketed saviours bypass traditional checks and balances in favour of quick solutions, which could promote distrust of institutions and politics. No wonder Soros confesses to moments of depression about his philanthropy, although his lack of triumphalism seems healthy. He knows that issues are often complex and his involvement can be seen as contradictory. His foundation has supported Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar, but also the Rohingya Muslims who suffered under her rule.

At times like these art becomes even more important, Dylan says. “That’s the role of film-makers and musicians, to point us forward, especially when times are tough.” It’s certainly what his father did in the 1960s. Do they ever talk about that time? “He’s not a nostalgic person, he’s always looking forward to the next thing.” Either that or back to the real oldies. “We probably spend more time on Milton or Shakespeare or Dante.” Neither father nor son does social media. “That’s a tough place to be.”

He admires the fact that his father is still producing interesting work at 80. “It’s hard to stick with the muse, that’s for sure, and not be a caricature of your past. You’re always struggling to outdo what you did before.” That’s Dylan’s take, anyway. “I don’t think he thinks that way at all. He’s just thinking, ‘Should I paint a picture today? Should I write a song?’ ”

We get on to the inevitable topic of following in illustrious footsteps. It must be harder for his brother, Jakob, who is a singer-songwriter. “I do think that’s a tough shadow, but he’s done very well,” Dylan says. I mention interviewing Julian Lennon, who knows all about paternal shadows. “Those are tough shoes to fill, very similar to my father’s. And in some ways it might even be harder [for Julian] because my dad’s still here with us.”

Bob sounds like a much warmer and more present father than Lennon Sr. “My dad’s great, he’s a totally kind, wonderful man,” Dylan says. “He’s been nothing but supportive to me and my brothers and sisters.” Jesse and Jakob, 51, have a sister, Anna, 54, and a brother Samuel, 53. They are all from Bob’s marriage to Sara Lownds, a former actress and model. There is also a half-sister, Desiree, 35, from Bob’s second marriage, to his former backing singer Carolyn Dennis.

When Jesse was born in 1966 in New York, Bob took some time away from music and it took his son a while to grasp his father’s global status. “It was a gradual sort of realisation because he’s very normal. None of that came home with him.” Jesse later travelled with him on his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975-76. “He kinda seemed fun.”

Bob and Lownds became estranged and eventually divorced in 1977, and the disintegration of their relationship is often said to have inspired Bob’s album Blood on the Tracks. He has denied this, claiming that the stories of Anton Chekhov were the touchstone, but Jakob told Rolling Stone magazine: “When I’m listening to Blood on the Tracks, that’s about my parents.” Dylan agrees. “It’s incredible what came out of that pain,” he says. “Not that I sit down and listen to it a lot.”

Has he seen I’m Not There, the film by Todd Haynes in which Bob was played by actors including Christian Bale, Richard Gere and Cate Blanchett? There’s a section featuring Heath Ledger as a proxy for Bob and Charlotte Gainsbourg as a character partly inspired by Lownds. “I like Todd, and he makes interesting movies, that’s for sure,” Dylan says. “But [Bob] is here with me, you know? I don’t want to think about that. That’s something else.”

After spending much of his life in New York, Dylan has been living for the past two years in Los Angeles with his wife, the actress Susan Traylor. They have a grown-up son, Pablo, and a daughter, Feury Mae. For legal reasons he can’t talk about recent allegations by an American woman that Bob sexually abused her in 1965 when she was 12. Dylan’s loyalty to his father is palpable, however. He speaks with huge pride of him winning the Nobel prize for literature in 2016. “He comes from a small town in Minnesota. He would never have expected that.” Just as a young George Soros in war-torn Budapest would never have expected to be shaping the world almost 75 years later.

Soros premieres at Bertha DocHouse, London WC1, on October 28 as part of the Raindance Film Festival (raindance.org) and will be streaming on Curzon Home Cinema from October 29-31
